A\u00fan cuando presenta un tema religioso cl\u00e1sico (la Piedad), el tratamiento de las figuras, la singular atm\u00f3sfera que construye el artista, la acercan en alguna medida a la pintura simbolista. Aparentemente, la obra fue recibida en Casa de Gobierno en 1914 (\u00abAyer se ha recibido en la Casa de Gobierno el anunciado cuadro de G\u00f3mez Clara que han reproducido varias revistas de arte europeas. El joven pintor se ha inspirado en un tema religioso: &#8216;La Piedad&#8217;, admirable composici\u00f3n por su factura, su colorido y su expresi\u00f3n. Se le ha mandado colocar un marco apropiado y una vez que se halle debidamente preparado, el gobernador ha dispuestos que se le exponga un d\u00eda al p\u00fablico en la Casa de Gobierno\u00bb, <em>Los Principios<\/em> 20\/06\/1914), pero habr\u00eda permanecido en poder de la fl\u00eda.
